Pastoral Women’s Council: Supporting People-Powered Advocacy For Land Rights

By Julie Tumbo, Ben Awinda, and Rhonda Schlangen

The Pastoral Women’s Council and Women’s Rights and Leadership Forums in forty-two villages united to protect pastoralists’ access to traditional land in Ngorongoro. Advocacy campaigns can be a way for people to accelerate the pace of change and organize action by communities to claim their rights. This case study profiles how the Pastoral Women’s Council responded to community needs and— in 2013, when those needs demanded a more activist approach—supported women and other members of pastoralist communities in Ngorongoro to protect their traditional lands from encroachment by developers. The case study is available in Kiswahili and English, in full text and graphic formats.
